Healthcare Literacy and Disparities, Dr. Skylar Moore (Healthcare Provider)

A power-point that will examine the effects of ethnicity, class, gender, culture, sexual orientation, and disability (as these influence the experience of
working with populations from diverse backgrounds in a healthcare context). It will emphasize the importance of studying by comparing intragroup and intergroup differences and similarities. The importance of understanding the historical roots of different ethnic groups and their salience in effecting mental and physical health outcomes will be examined. A large emphasize will be placed on the importance of outreach and education with under-served populations to impact health outcomes in a more positive way. McGregor, Belton, Henry, Wrenn, and Holden (2019) report that in any current health care setting, cultural competence continues to be recognized as one of the most important features of high-quality health care delivery. The aforementioned sources report that this will continue for decades to come and will continue to be vital. As the society in which Americans live becomes increasingly more culturally diverse, medical providers must realize that this also means that there will be an increase in associated health disparities.
