ALAHOPE Recorded Course - Substance Use Disorder in the Emergency Department
An interactive, online training session substance use disorders within emergency healthcare settings.

Target Audience
This knowledge-based program is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Pharmacy Technicians (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), Physician Assistants (ACCME), Nurse Practitioners (ACCME), Nurses (ABN), Social Workers (ABSWE), Dentists (BDEA), Optometrists (ABO), Podiatrists (ABP), and Attendance Credit/Certificate for Counselors, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize the impact the substance use crisis has on the ED and common signs of aberrant prescription drug use in emergency departments
- Recognize an opioid overdose, how to reverse an overdose with naloxone, and that additional medical complications that can occur in ED patients with substance use disorder, such as skin, soft tissue, and cardiac complications
- Recall methods of effective communication with ED patients without stigma or judgement, change talk, and basic motivational interviewing skills.
- Repeat benefits of using social works and peer support in the ED for treating patients with substance use disorder and when it is appropriate to initiate buprenorphine treatment in the ED
