Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Clinical Overview for Pharmacists
The global prevalence of RA is 1%, making it a disease state likely to be encountered by pharmacists in any practice setting. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a clinical overview of rheumatoid arthritis, including epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
Target Audience
This application-based program is intended for pharmacists.
Learning Objectives
1. Recall complications associated with rheumatoid arthritis, including risks if left untreated.
2. Understand the underlying pathophysiology of RA.
3. Describe the clinical presentation and diagnosis of RA, including serologic markers, radiographic evidence, and the use of a standardized classification system.
4. Develop a guideline-directed treatment plan for a patient with RA.
5. Compare and contrast conventional synthetic, targeted synthetic, and biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).

Dr. Clay Hayes and Dr. Katie Jones are pharmacists in the department of clinical immunology, rheumatology, and osteoporosis at the Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital in Birmingham. They provide clinical and specialty pharmacy services to patients with an array of immune- and inflammatory-mediated conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis.
