Stigma producing language is problematic in the fight for opioid abuse prevention and opioid use disorder. Persons who feel judged are less likely toseek treatment and are more likely to drop out of treatment. Learning how to communicate in a person-first manner can help persons with substance use disorder (SUD) feel less judged and more supported.

This presentation will focus on treatment options for pain in the adolescent population. Pain may occur after trauma, such as sports injuries or procedures, such as wisdom teeth extraction in this population. Non-pharmacological therapies should be considered, as well as non-opioid pharmacological therapies. Pain management with opioid medications may be indicated, but best practices should be used when prescribing treatments, and patient education should occur to the patient and caregiver. We are in an opioid epidemic crisis at this time.

Much attention has been focused on drugs with a known abuse potential. As efforts to minimize drug misuse and abuse has intensified, people have sought out alternative ways to achieve highs or other illicit effects, including using products that historically have not been considered drugs of abuse. This is a growing, but not often discussed trend.
