The C.A.R.E.S. continuing education programs are designed for Alabama pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to provide an overview of Medicare and the roles of the Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) with the primary goal to help pharmacists and pharmacy staff effectively and efficiently assist Medicare beneficiaries. All of our CE programs are funded by the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) and the U.S. Administration for Community Living. They are made available to pharmacists and technicians in Alabama at no cost.

The opioid epidemic, increases in suicide rates and mental health issues are clearly related.  Individuals with chronic pain tend to have higher rates of mental illness and are frequently prescribed opioids.  When physicians cut patients off of their opioid, people often turn to street drugs like heroin to prevent withdrawal.  More and more often heroin and other street drugs are laced with fentanyl, worsening the opioid epidemic.

This presentation was developed in conjunction with the Alabama Cardiovascular Cooperative in efforts to educate healthcare providers on the recognition and management of cardiovascular disease and risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This module will review environmental factors that contribute to hypertension as well as secondary and drug induced causes of hypertension. The impact of nonpharmacologic interventions on systolic blood pressure is discussed and treatment thresholds for antihypertensive drug therapy are reviewed.
