The five key domain areas of SDOH and how they contribute to health disparities will also be explored. Populations vulnerable to health disparities and common health disparities in the Southeast will be described, along with general strategies to address these in the pursuit of health equity for all, including those with substance use disorders. The audience can expect to have a greater understanding of the relationship between how population groups experience “place” and the impact of “place” on health, and the important role healthcare professionals have.

This presentation will cover commonly used dietary supplements including herbal supplements and vitamins that are used in the older adult population. Evidence continues to emerge exploring the risks vs benefits of dietary supplements particularly with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, multi-vitamins as well as other supplements. It is pertinent for pharmacists to have an understanding of when these supplements are safe to use and when they should be de-prescribed.

Use of aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease is a controversial topic. Recent evidence, compounded by the ACC/AHA guidelines on primary prevention suggests that Aspirin risks of gastrointestinal bleeding outweigh the benefit of cardiovascular protection. It is important to understand when aspirin is indicated and which patients serve to benefit from daily use.

Topic was requested by 2019 program attendees. With increasing interest in integrative and alternative medicine, cannabis products, including medical marijuana and cannabidiol (CBD), have become widespread across the country. The current opioid epidemic compounds this interest as providers and patients are also seeking additional options for pain management. While the lay press and media promote cannabis and associated products, the evidence is limited and only a few products have been sufficiently tested and received FDA approval.
