Overview
This is a lecture to raise the awareness of the incidence of substance use disorders, explain some of the neurochemical reasons some people become addicted and address some of the treatments available for healthcare professionals.
Target Audience
This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians.
Learning Objectives
1) DESCRIBE PREDISPOSITION TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE
2) IDENTIFY THE BASIC NEUROCHEMISTY IN THE PLEASURE REWARD CENTERS OF THE BRAIN AS RELATED TO ADDICTION
3) RECOGNIZE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE RESPONSE TO MOOD ALTERING CHEMICALS BETWEEN GENETICALLY PREDISPOSED PEOPLE AND NON-PREDISPOSED PEOPLE
4) IDENTIFY THE SYMPTOMS OF SUBSTANCE DEPENDENCE
5) EXPLAIN WHY “JUST SAY NO” DOES NOT WORK IN SUBSTANCE DEPENDENCE
