1. Determine the appropriate GOLD group for a patient with COPD.
2. Recommend an appropriate initial therapy for a patient with COPD.
3. Recommend patients that would benefit from the addition of second-line therapies.
4. Discuss patient-specific factors that influence the prescribing of COPD therapies.

Nathan Pinner, Pharm.D., BCPS is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Harrison School of Pharmacy. Originally from Covington, Tennessee, Dr. Pinner graduated with a B.S. in Biochemistry from Mississippi State University in 2003 and received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 2007. He went on to complete a PGY-1 residency at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee followed by a PGY-2 Internal Medicine specialty residency with Methodist University Hospital and the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Pinner has been instrumental in the development of the Practice Ready Curriculum through his service as coordinator of the P2 Fall Semester. Additionally, he served as the course coordinator for the therapeutics sequence in the legacy curriculum. Through these roles, Dr. Pinner has developed creative and authentic assessments and is active in the school-wide test item improvement initiative. He has been recognized for his teaching efforts by receiving the Excellence in Teaching award in 2018.
Dr. Pinner has presented original research and spoken nationally regarding his assessment strategies. He teaches extensively in the area of pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, and evidence-based pharmacotherapy.
Dr. Pinner is highly involved in the Alabama Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ALSHP), having served as the Director of Organizational Affairs. During his time on the board of directors with ALSHP he led initiatives to increase membership and founded the InPharmative Quarterly, a quarterly professional publication of the society. Additionally, he has served the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) extensively through membership on the Council on Therapeutics, where he assisted the organization develop therapeutic policies, and with other various committees.
Dr. Pinner’s scholarly program focuses on pulmonary pharmacotherapy and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He has published and spoken nationally on both of these topics. He also works with students and residents to develop their projects.
He and his wife, Adriane, live in Birmingham with their two children, Sam and Sybil.
