Alabama Infectious Diseases Society 2025 Annual Meeting
The purpose of the Alabama Infectious Diseases Society (ALIDS) is to promote strong antimicrobial stewardship throughout the state of Alabama. This in-person meeting will provide educational sessions on different topics related to antimicrobial stewardship.
Target Audience
This application-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), and Nurses (ABN).
Learning Objectives
1) Review existing and emerging drug resistance in Gram negative bacteria
2) Understand new and pipeline antimicrobials for multidrug resistant Gram negative bacteria
3) Describe treatment updates for multidrug resistant Gram negative bacteria
4) Describe the Antimicrobial Paradox (The more we use antibiotics the less effective they are)
5) Explain what a Bacteriophage is and what it does
6) Review the History of Bacteriophages
7) Review Literature explaining the use of Bacteriophages
8) Discuss how dogma surrounding antibiotics affects patient care
9) Outline how the dogma changed around treating certain infections with oral versus intravenous therapy
10) Review updated evidence of oral vs IV antibiotics for infections and highlight the risks of each
11) Compare and contrast traditional inpatient antimicrobial stewardship and OPAT stewardship.
12) Identify OPAT best practices based on published data
13) Given a patient scenario, design an optimal OPAT regimen

Dr. Sam Aitken is a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Infectious Diseases at Michigan Medicine and Adjunct Clinical Professor at The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy as well as immediate past president of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists. Dr. Aitken’s research and clinical practice focus on infections in immunocompromised hosts with a special interest in multi-drug resistant bacterial infections. He was an author of the first three editions of the Infectious Diseases Society of America Guidance on the Treatment of Antimicrobial-resistant Gram-Negative infections.
Dr. Nicolas Bordas has had an ongoing passion for Infectious Diseases since early in his residency. 8 out of 12 of his presentations to the American College of Physicians were ID related, including his presentation the ACP national Conference in 2017 and when he won 3rd place prize in 2014. He finished Infectious Diseases in Virginia Tech at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke Virginia in 2020. After moving to Gadsden Alabama in 2020, he rose to leadership positions at Gadsden Regional Medical Center where he is currently the Chair Of Medicine, Chair of Antimicrobial Stewardship and Co-chair of the Quality Improvement Committee. In addition, he is deeply involved with the local residency program as well as a Clinical Preceptor for both ACOM and VCOM. Dr. Bordas is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease and an HIV Specialist by American Association of HIV Medicine. Dr. Bordas enjoys playing volleyball, and he is big movie buff, frequently hosting movie marathons with his wife and "Zosyn" his pet golden retriever. His areas of interest are HIV, Hepatitis C and Tropical Diseases Non antibiotic Approach to MDRO.
Dr. Rachael Lee Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama Heersink School of Medicine. She is a clinician investigator with broad knowledge of healthcare-associated infections and serves as the UAB Medicine Chief Healthcare Epidemiologist. In this role, she leads and manages a large team of physicians and infection preventionists and is integrally involved in healthcare management that includes regulatory review, patient safety, quality improvement, clinical practice and education, and public reporting of infections.
Dr. Monica Mahoney earned her PharmD from MCPHS University - Boston and completed PGY1 and PGY2-ID training at Tufts Medical Center. She is board certified in pharmacotherapy and infectious diseases. For almost 10 years, she practiced as the clinical coordinator of infectious diseases at BIDMC, before taking on a new position in the outpatient ID and OPAT clinics where she has been for 6 years now. Dr. Mahoney is a proud member of several infectious diseases and pharmacy organizations including ACCP, ASHP, IDSA, SHEA, and SIDP and has held leadership positions in many of them. She is a fellow of ACCP, IDSA, SIDP, and the MA state pharmacy society, MSHP. She currently serves as an associate editor at OFID and is on the editorial advisory boards for Contagion Live and ASHE. In her spare time, she coordinates monthly virtual meetings among pharmacists and other clinicians practicing in OPAT.
