Exploring Cannabidiol and Medical Marijuana Through a Pharmacist Lens

Topic was requested by 2019 program attendees. With increasing interest in integrative and alternative medicine, cannabis products, including medical marijuana and cannabidiol (CBD), have become widespread across the country. The current opioid epidemic compounds this interest as providers and patients are also seeking additional options for pain management. While the lay press and media promote cannabis and associated products, the evidence is limited and only a few products have been sufficiently tested and received FDA approval. As accessible and trustworthy practitioners, pharmacists need to be well equipped to provide unbiased, accurate information on the benefits and risks of these products and therapies.

The target audience for this course is Pharmacists and Nurses.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic profiles of the most common cannabinoids.
  2. Describe state and federal regulation pertinent to medical marijuana and cannabidiol (CBD) products.
  3. Summarize the efficacy and safety of cannabis products for both FDA-approved indications and additional studied indications.
  4. Support the role of pharmacists by providing evidence-based recommendations and education related to cannabis products.

Katelin Lisenby

PharmD, BCPS

 

Katelin M. Lisenby, Pharm.D., BCPS is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Auburn University Harrison School
of Pharmacy and an adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences Department of Family,
Internal, and Rural Medicine. Dr. Lisenby earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2013. She then
went on to complete an ASHP Accredited residency in Pharmacy Practice at DCH Regional Medical Center in 2014. Following this completion, she
joined the Auburn faculty beginning in the fall of 2014. Dr. Lisenby's clinical practice is in ambulatory care at The Good Samaritan Clinic, which is a free
primary care clinic in rural West Alabama that provides care to the uninsured in the seven surrounding counties. She collaborates with physicians and
Family Medicine medical residents using an interdisciplinary shared visit model for patient encounters.
