2022 Consultant Pharmacist 10 hr Certification: Medication Management for the Older Adult - Mobile

This program will provide 10 hours of CE credit. The Friday portion of the program will be directed to those wanting to receive Consultant Certification from the Alabama Board of Pharmacy. Saturday’s programming will focus on disease states and medications that impact the older adult. Registration for this course includes both Friday and Saturday programming for a total of 10 hours of CE credit. All 10 hours of programming are approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy for consultant credit hours as well as ACPE credit hours.

Target Audience

This knowledge-based program is intended for pharmacists and will provide 10 hours of continuing education over two days.  This program has been approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy as a prerequisite course to apply for consultant pharmacist certification with the ALBOP.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize common age-related changes affecting medication management in older adults.
  • Outline the changes in the 2019 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria update.
  • Define deprescribing and describe tools used for deprescribing medications in older adults.
  • Apply principles of age-related changes and deprescribing fundamentals to a patient case.
  • Summarize the requirements for consultant licensure for the Alabama Board of Pharmacy.
  • Identify pharmacy-related regulations in CMS Appendix PP - Guidance to Surveyors for Long Term Care Facilities
  • Describe the role and responsibilities of the pharmacist in the many components of medication provision, management, security, and assessment in Long Term Care facilities
  • Define medication errors in a long-term care setting
  • Given an example, classify the level of medication error in a long term care setting
  • Utilizing knowledge of age-related changes in older adults and CMS requirements of pharmacists, appropriately make recommendations for medication management when given a patient case
  • Review consensus recommendations and treatment pathways for heart failure and ischemic stroke.
  • Determine effective treatment regimens for patients with heart failure and non-cardioembolic stroke.
  • Differentiate the roles of the various forms of omega 3 fatty acid for the treatment of hypertryglyceridemia and cardiovascular risk reduction
  • Select the most appropriate triglyceride lowering agent for a given patient with hypertriglyceridemia
  • Discuss the rate of comorbidity between medical and mental health conditions
  • Describe the current evidence-based approaches for treating individuals with chronic medical conditions and mental health disorders
  • Identify medications that interact with aspirin therapy concerning efficacy and bleeding
  • Describe the risks and benefits of aspirin therapy when used for primary prevention
  • Summarize major updates to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes – 2022
  • Recommend evidence-based pharmacotherapy for the management of hyperglycemia based on patient-specific factors according to the ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes – 2022
