The role of triglyceride lowering therapies for cardiovascular event prevention has been hotly debated and studied over the past decade. Optimal therapy, for the treatment of mild – moderately elevated triglycerides is inconclusive and evidence supporting specific pharmacotherapy for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia continues to evolve. This session will review the 2021 American College of Cardiology Expert Consensus Statement and address emerging science aligning the approach to treatment of elevated triglycerides with that of elevated LDL. This session will explain the role of triglycerides as an indicator of residual cardiovascular risk, reinforce the importance of lifestyle modification for the treatment of triglycerides, address evidence-based pharmacotherapy, and introduce attendees to drug therapy management considerations for triglyceride based patient management groups.
Target Audience
This knowledge-based program is intended for pharmacists and will provide 1 hour of continuing education.
Learning Objectives
• Describe the treatment recommendations for mild to moderately and severely elevated triglycerides
• Differentiate the roles of the various forms of omega 3 fatty acid for the treatment of hypertryglyceridemia and cardiovascular risk reduction
• Select the most appropriate triglyceride lowering agent for a given patient with hypertriglyceridemia
