Target Audience

This application-based program is intended for pharmacists. 

Learning Objectives

  • Review recommended glycemic goals, treatment options, and outcome data for older adults with type 2 diabetes
  • Discuss the time to benefit for intensive glycemic control and glucose-lowering therapies for microvascular and macrovascular outcomes
  • Analyze trial data and apply the results of cardiovascular and renal outcomes trials to older adults with type 2 diabetes
  • Explain the process of bone remodeling and the role of calcium and vitamin D, including risk factors for developing osteoporosis
  • Interpret T-score and FRAX score to determine the diagnosis of osteoporosis and if treatment indicated
  • Given a patient with osteoporosis, develop an evidence-based therapeutic plan
  • Define potentially inappropriate medications in older adults.
  • Recognize the appropriate use and application of the American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria, including changes between the 2019 and 2023 version of the AGS Beers Criteria.
  • Given a patient case, determine therapeutic recommendations based on the application of the AGS Beers Criteria
  • Identify characteristics, benefits, risks, and optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT)
  • Review current recommendations for use of DAPT in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  • Identify potential candidates for shortened duration of DAPT after PCI

This CE program will provide insight into managing type 2 diabetes in older adults. The presentation will focus on cardiorenal outcomes and drug therapy benefiting those outcomes.

 9:00 am        Postmenopausal Osteoporosis - Dr. Phillippe

This CE program will provide insight into managing postmenopausal osteoporosis. The presentation will focus on evidence-based recommendations based on patient-specific factors. 

10:00 am      The 2023 Beers Criteria: No Longer Just a Draft - Dr. Hutchison

Providing care for older adult patients requires many considerations for safe medication use. Several tools are available to help utilize the most appropriate medications in older adults. The American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria is one of the most commonly utilized tools and has been updated in 2023. This presentation will review the changes made to the criteria and discuss the appropriate use of the criteria in practice.

11:00 am       Dual Antiplatelet Therapy in Acute Coronary Syndrome Following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention - Dr. Alyssa Osmonson 

The use of dual antiplatelet therapy and its duration in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is rapidly evolving. This presentation will focus on reviewing current evidence and recommendations on the use of DAPT in ACS post-PCI, with a focus on duration.

Amber M. Hutchison, PharmD, BCPS, BCGP

Dr. Amber Hutchison is a 2007 graduate of Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy. She is currently an Associate Clinical Professor at HCOP where she serves as a skills lab coordinator in the second and third professional years. Her practice site is at the Skilled Nursing Facility at East Alabama Medical Center and is an internal medicine preceptor for fourth year pharmacy students.

Dr. Alyssa Osmonson is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in cardiology at Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Originally from Dothan, Alabama, Alyssa completed
her pre-pharmacy coursework at Auburn University and graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy from the Harrison College of Pharmacy in 2019. After graduation, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama
where she completed both a pharmacy practice residency and a specialty residency in adult internal medicine at Princeton Baptist Medical Center.

 

Haley M. Phillippe, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCGP, FASCP

Dr. Haley M. Phillippe is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice with Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy (HSOP), and Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine with the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Huntsville Campus. Her practice site is a large family medicine center, where she provides disease state management and pharmacotherapy services to patients, and actively educates medical residents, medical students, pharmacy residents, and pharmacy students. Dr. Phillippe also has more than 10 years of practice experience in skilled nursing facilities. Her professional interests include geriatrics, anticoagulation, diabetes, transitions of care, and drugs of abuse.
