The following ASHP PGY-1 Residency Goals & Objectives are achieved through participation in all of the RTLP activities (Competency Area E6: Teaching and Learning):
- Goal E6.1 Demonstrate foundational knowledge of teaching, learning, and assessment in healthcare education.
- Objective E6.1.1 (Understanding) Explain strategies and interventions for teaching, learning, and assessment in healthcare education.
- Objective E6.1.2 (Understanding) Explain academic roles and associated issues.
- Goal E6.2 Develops and practices a philosophy of teaching.
- Objective E6.2.1 (Creating) Develop a teaching philosophy statement.
- Objective E6.2.2 (Creating) Prepare a practice-based teaching activity.
- Objective E6.2.3 (Applying) Deliver a practice-based educational activity, including didactic or experiential teaching, or facilitation.
- Objective E6.2.4 (Creating) Effectively document one's teaching philosophy, skills, and experiences in a teaching portfolio.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
Residents will select 1 track of emphasis for the program year. The academic track is designed to prepare residents for a clinical faculty position at a school of pharmacy while the preceptor track is designed to prepare residents for a clinical preceptor role. A certificate of achievement will be awarded after all program requirements are completed and reviewed.
Academia Track
Attend and actively participate in all day-long intensive workshop sessions on the Auburn or Mobile campus. An alternate location in Birmingham or Huntsville may also be available.
Intensive Session #1: Saturday, August 24, 2024
Intensive Session #2: Saturday, January 25, 2025
Participate in additional educational sessions.
Two (2) elective activities (e.g., seminars/discussions/readings, etc.) related to classroom or experiential teaching and learning identified by the resident or hosted by RTLP.
One to two (1-2) video meetings and/or online discussions as determined by the RTLP coordinators.
Create and deliver two (2) unique classroom-style teaching activities for different audiences.
One activity is delivered to student pharmacists while the other is delivered to an audience other than student pharmacists.
Both teaching activities must include active learning components.
The student pharmacist teaching activity should occur in the classroom setting for a non-experiential course.
Serve as a co-preceptor for an IPPE or APPE rotation for at least 2 weeks.
Participate as a facilitator for an HCOP course on at least one (1) occasion.
Grade at least one (1) approved assessment activity for an HCOP course.
Complete a COPUS peer teaching evaluation for a fellow resident.
Develop and revise a teaching philosophy statement.
Complete reflections on above activities.
Create an online teaching portfolio (website) that connects your teaching to your teaching philosophy and includes reflections on RTLP activities.
Preceptor Track
Attend and actively participate in all half-day intensive workshop sessions on the Auburn or Mobile campus. An alternate location in Birmingham or Huntsville may also be available.

AU HCOP Preceptor Development Modules.
HCOP Preceptor CE program (webinar – live or recorded): Live date - Sunday, September 8, 2024
Two (2) elective activities (e.g., seminars/discussions/readings, etc.) related to experiential teaching and learning identified by the resident or hosted by RTLP.
One to two (1-2) video meetings and/or online discussions as determined by the RTLP coordinators.
Serve as a co-preceptor for an IPPE or APPE rotation for at least 4 weeks (consecutive or cumulative). The resident will serve as a primary preceptor for at least 2 consecutive weeks.
Create and deliver three (3) unique teaching activities for different audiences.
Two (2) teaching activities are developed for student pharmacist audiences on IPPEs or APPEs. These should not be presentation focused but instead hold students accountable for self-directed learning and emphasize active learning. Ideally these will occur during co-precepting; however, they can occur during monthly student orientation sessions. These should be small group precepting activities and not grand rounds type of activities where other audiences are included.
One (1) teaching activity is delivered to an audience other than student pharmacists.
Create a syllabus for an IPPE or APPE rotation to include student assignments, a grading plan, and a rotation schedule/calendar.
Complete a peer teaching evaluation for a fellow resident.
Develop and revise a precepting philosophy statement.
Complete reflections on the above activities.
Create an online precepting portfolio (website), which connects your teaching to your teaching philosophy and includes reflections on RTLP activities.

A program fee of $100 will be required with application materials (paid by the program or resident directly unless the resident is part of a program that takes Auburn IPPE/APPE students). A coupon code will be provided to programs that work with our students or are establishing an agreement to work with our students. The code will be emailed separately to RPDs of qualifying programs.
Once enrolled in the course, you will need to complete 2 items
A brief survey (10-15 minutes, which includes your application for a 1-year instructor appointment.
You will also need to upload a signed letter of support from your RPD. The letter (application signature page) is attached to this email.

OR - I am an Auburn HCOP graduate, please request a copy of my transcript from the university. (We can request transcripts for HCOP graduates.)

Completion of the application process and approval can take 3-4 weeks. You will not be able to teach students or obtain access to the RTLP Canvas Course Website until this application is completed, the above items are provided, and all are approved by the Provost’s office.
