2024 Consultant Pharmacist Update - Medication Management for the Older Adult- Live Webinar
**The 4-hour program is for pharmacists only who already have their Consultant license**
This program will focus on disease states and medications that impact the older adult. The 4-hour program will be hosted via zoom webinar. All 4 hours of programming are approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy for consultant credit hours as well as ACPE credit hours.

Learning Objectives
- Determine the appropriate GOLD group for a patient with COPD and patient-specific factors that influence the prescribing of COPD therapies.
- Recommend an appropriate initial therapy for a patient with COPD and when patients that would benefit from the addition of second-line therapies.
- Discuss the importance of a collaborative, multidisciplinary, and patient-centered care approach in the management of chronic coronary disease, including strategies for optimizing pharmacologic treatment regimens to improve patient outcomes.
- Evaluate recent clinical trial data and current guidelines related to the use of pharmacologic therapies in chronic coronary disease.
- Identify potentially important drug interactions in older adults according to the 2023 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria® also relating to individual factors.
- Review drug interaction resources and mitigation strategies
- Describe the basics of Medicare, including Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D and considerations for older adults.
- Understand financial assistance programs for older adults.
- Understand how to protect older adults against Medicare fraud.

8:00 am COPD: It's as Easy at ABE - Dr. Pinner
- This presentation will provide attendees with an update on key changes in COPD over the past 5 years.
9:00 am Drug Interactions - Dr. Roberts
- This presentation will cover the essentials of drug interactions (recognize, evaluate, mitigate) with specific focus on drug-drug and drug disease interactions in older adults (i.e. 65 years of age or older). Older adults are more likely than younger adults to take numerous concomitant medications and have multiple comorbidities increasing their risk of drug interactions and subsequent adverse drug events. Unique evidence-based resources and mitigation strategies can be employed within the older adult population and education regarding these resources and strategies will be provided. Education will be delivered via slide set with embedded multiple-choice questions posed to the audience to assess learning in this knowledge based session.
10:00 am Heart of the Matter: Tackling Chronic Coronary Disease - Dr. McCoy
- Chronic coronary disease (CCD), formerly known as "stable ischemic heart disease," encompasses a diverse range of conditions, including both obstructive and nonobstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), with or without a history of myocardial infarction (MI) or revascularization. It also includes ischemic heart disease diagnosed solely through noninvasive testing and chronic angina syndromes arising from various underlying causes. Approximately 20 million people in the United States live with CCD, and it remains a leading cause of death. This presentation will review current treatment guidelines, discuss the literature evaluating safety and efficacy of various therapies, including antithrombotic agents, for the treatment of CCD.
11:00 am Medicare and Medicaid: Understanding Assistance Programs for Older Adults - Dr. Hohmann
- This presentation will describe the basics of Medicare and Medicaid, financial assistance programs for older adults, and how to protect older adults from Medicare fraud.

Lindsey Hohmann, Pharm.D., Ph.D., joined the Harrison School of Pharmacy as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice on October 1, 2019.
In her role, she will promote clinical and translational science research within the school. Dr. Hohmann’s research interests include implementation science and mixed methods, substance misuse prevention, and implementation of innovations in community-based healthcare organizations.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in cell and developmental biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2008, Dr. Hohmann went on to complete her Pharm.D. at the University of California San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2012. After spending several years in practice, Dr. Hohmann came to Auburn, completing her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2019.
While at HSOP, she studied in the Health Outcomes Research and Policy option. Her doctoral dissertation, “Empowering community pharmacists to prevent opioid overdose deaths: development and implementation of a targeted naloxone training program,” focused on enhancing naloxone services implementation in community pharmacies in Alabama. The study was funded by Auburn University departmental support and grant number R36HS026669 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Dr. Hohmann is a Medication Therapy Management (MTM) certified pharmacist. She is also active within the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR).
Emily McCoy, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCACP is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy's Department of Pharmacy Practice and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She also currently serves as the interim assistant dean for the Mobile campus and for Student Success. In this role, she coordinates various aspects of student life on the Mobile Campus. In partnership with the Mobile Campus Curricular Coordinator, she demonstrates a strong student-centered focus to ensure every student has unparalleled, world-class, and profound opportunities for personal, intellectual, and professional growth while a student at HCOP. As part of her role in Student Success, Dr. McCoy developed and directs the HCOP Peer Coaching Program, which is intended to provide students with individual and group support throughout the didactic portion of the Practice Ready Curriculum (PRC).
Dr. McCoy graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee in 2008. She completed a residency in ambulatory care with a focus in academia in Memphis with the UT-St. Francis Family Medicine residency program and became Board Certified in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (BCACP) in 2011. Dr. McCoy joined the Auburn faculty in August 2009 and has been heavily involved in the development, delivery, and coordination of the PRC, and she served as the course coordinator for the P2 Fall semester for five years.
Dr. McCoy is active in several national pharmacy organizations including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). She also currently serves as faculty for the ACCP/ASHP BCACP Review and Recertification Course.
Nathan Pinner, Pharm.D., BCPS is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Harrison School of Pharmacy. Originally from Covington, Tennessee, Dr. Pinner graduated with a B.S. in Biochemistry from Mississippi State University in 2003 and received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 2007. He went on to complete a PGY-1 residency at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee followed by a PGY-2 Internal Medicine specialty residency with Methodist University Hospital and the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Pinner has been instrumental in the development of the Practice Ready Curriculum through his service as coordinator of the P2 Fall Semester. Additionally, he served as the course coordinator for the therapeutics sequence in the legacy curriculum. Through these roles, Dr. Pinner has developed creative and authentic assessments and is active in the school-wide test item improvement initiative. He has been recognized for his teaching efforts by receiving the Excellence in Teaching award in 2018.
Dr. Pinner has presented original research and spoken nationally regarding his assessment strategies. He teaches extensively in the area of pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, and evidence-based pharmacotherapy.
Dr. Pinner is highly involved in the Alabama Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ALSHP), having served as the Director of Organizational Affairs. During his time on the board of directors with ALSHP he led initiatives to increase membership and founded the InPharmative Quarterly, a quarterly professional publication of the society. Additionally, he has served the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) extensively through membership on the Council on Therapeutics, where he assisted the organization develop therapeutic policies, and with other various committees.
Dr. Pinner’s scholarly program focuses on pulmonary pharmacotherapy and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He has published and spoken nationally on both of these topics. He also works with students and residents to develop their projects.
He and his wife, Adriane, live in Birmingham with their two children, Sam and Sybil.
Megan Zeek Roberts, PharmD, BCPS is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Harrison College of Pharmacy. Dr. Roberts joined HCOP in July 2023. A two-time Auburn graduate, she earned a bachelor of science degree in biomedical sciences in 2014 while completing her Pharm.D. (2015). Upon graduation, she completed a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and stayed on for a PGY-2 internal medicine residency also at MUSC.
At HCOP, she teaches within the Practice Ready Curriculum in both the didactic and experiential settings. She also contributes to research and scholarship focused on topics related to inpatient clinical practice, internal medicine pharmacotherapy, and pharmacy education. Her areas of specialty include internal medicine, cardiology, and nephrology.
Prior to joining the faculty at HCOP, she worked for six years as an assistant professor at the Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy.
Professionally, she is an active member serving in various roles and committees within the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Alabama Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ALSHP). In 2016, she became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. Roberts received the New Practitioner of the Year Award from the ALSHP in 2018 and the Service Award in 2022.
