2026 Consultant Pharmacist Update - Medication Management for the Older Adult- Live Webinar
**The 4-hour program is for pharmacists only who already have their Consultant license**
This program will focus on disease states and medications that impact the older adult. The 4-hour program will be hosted via zoom webinar. All 4 hours of programming are approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy for consultant credit hours as well as ACPE credit hours.

Learning Objectives
1. Apply current evidence-based guidelines and therapeutic updates to optimize chronic disease management and medication-related outcomes.
2. Evaluate patient-specific clinical factors to support individualized medication selection, dosing, monitoring, and deprescribing decisions.
3. Incorporate principles of medication safety, pharmacovigilance, and risk assessment into pharmacy practice to improve patient care and minimize medication-related harm.
4. Utilize evidence-based risk assessment tools and kidney function estimation methods to support safe and effective pharmacotherapy decisions across diverse patient populations.
5. Recommend appropriate deprescribing or dose-adjustment strategies when antihypertensive therapy contributes to adverse effects such as dizziness, hypotension, or renal dysfunction.
6. Describe key updates in the 2026 ACC/AHA Multisociety cholesterol guideline, including changes in risk assessment and treatment thresholds.
7. Evaluate and prioritize lipid-lowering treatment strategies based on patient risk category, comorbidities, and updated lipid targets.
8. Compare and contrast the development and accuracy of Cockcroft-Gault with BSA-adjusted race free CKD- EPI eGFR equations for estimating kidney function.

8:00 am Managing the Pressure: Practical Hypertension Updates - Dr. Jeanna Sewell
Review current hypertension guideline updates and practical treatment strategies for diverse patient populations, including older adults and patients with diabetes or chronic kidney disease. This session will also address medication selection, dose adjustments, and deprescribing considerations to support safe and effective blood pressure management.
9:00 am Patient Safety and Post-marketing Pharmacovigilance - Dr. Jingjing Qian
Explore the pharmacist’s role in medication safety and post-marketing pharmacovigilance. Participants will gain an overview of key pharmacovigilance principles, public safety considerations, and methodologies for identifying, evaluating, and monitoring medication-related risks after products enter the market.
10:00 am Lipid Treatment - Dr. Emily McCoy
Examine key updates in dyslipidemia management, including the latest cholesterol guideline recommendations, cardiovascular risk assessment tools, and emerging biomarkers. This session will focus on individualized treatment strategies and evidence-based approaches for selecting lipid-lowering therapy.
11:00 am Kidney Function and Drug Dosing - Dr. Rebecca Maxon
Gain practical insight into updated approaches for estimating kidney function and applying these calculations to medication dosing decisions. Participants will compare traditional and newer race-free equations, interpret eGFR results, and discuss clinical and legal considerations related to kidney-based dosing strategies.

Jeanna Sewell, Pharm.D., BCACP is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice with the Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy. She joined the HCOP faculty on August 1, 2016. She graduated with her Pharm.D. from the Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2014 and went on to complete two residency programs. She completed a community pharmacy PGY-1 residency at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Jackson, Mississippi. She stayed around for another year to complete an ambulatory care PGY-2 residency, also with the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. Sewell serves as the Director of Interprofessional Education where she works with other health professions on campus to offer students experiences that teach them how to work as a member of an interprofessional team to provide the best care to patients. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Sewell is a member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy where she serves of various committees. She now lives in Auburn with her husband, Eric, and their two children.
Practice Site
Sewell maintains a practice site at Mercy Medical Clinic in Auburn, Alabama. Mercy Medical Clinic is an indigent clinic that works to provide primary care serves for uninsured and Medicaid patients in Auburn and the surrounding area. At this site she provides disease state management and transitions of care services. Her areas of interest include transitions of care, diabetes management, and interprofessional education.
Jingjing Qian, Ph.D, is an Associate Professor in the Harrison College of Pharmacy's Department of Health Outcomes Research and Policy. Her research Interests focus on health outcomes and pharmacoepidemiology research, particularly with regards to comparative effectiveness and safety of drug products. The goal of her research is to provide effective strategies and interventions to improve population health and eliminate health disparities. Qian's research has involved promoting generic drug post-marketing surveillance and education with collaboration from off-campus partners supported by multiple U.S. FDA grants. Currently, she is focusing on cancer epidemiology, prevention, and comparative effectiveness of treatments among patients with breast, prostate, and lung cancer. Additional research interests include mental health, substance use disorders, and disability research, treatment optimization and outcomes for patients with chronic conditions, medication adherence, and quality of care among vulnerable populations.
Emily McCoy, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCACP is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy's Department of Pharmacy Practice and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She also currently serves as the interim assistant dean for the Mobile campus and for Student Success. In this role, she coordinates various aspects of student life on the Mobile Campus. In partnership with the Mobile Campus Curricular Coordinator, she demonstrates a strong student-centered focus to ensure every student has unparalleled, world-class, and profound opportunities for personal, intellectual, and professional growth while a student at HCOP. As part of her role in Student Success, Dr. McCoy developed and directs the HCOP Peer Coaching Program, which is intended to provide students with individual and group support throughout the didactic portion of the Practice Ready Curriculum (PRC). Dr. McCoy graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee in 2008. She completed a residency in ambulatory care with a focus in academia in Memphis with the UT-St. Francis Family Medicine residency program and became Board Certified in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (BCACP) in 2011. Dr. McCoy joined the Auburn faculty in August 2009 and has been heavily involved in the development, delivery, and coordination of the PRC, and she served as the course coordinator for the P2 Fall semester for five years. Dr. McCoy is active in several national pharmacy organizations including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). She also currently serves as faculty for the ACCP/ASHP BCACP Review and Recertification Course.
A three-time graduate from Auburn University, Rebecca Maxson earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1991 and a master's in chemical engineering in 1993. Dr. Maxson then worked as a controls engineer in industry for 10 years before returning to The Plains to complete her pharmacy degree. Dr. Maxson earned her Pharm.D. from HCOP in 2008 and went on to complete a PGY-1 residency at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Following her residency, she was a clinical pharmacy specialist at Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham from 2009-15. While at Princeton she rounded with the nephrology and palliative care services and was an active preceptor in Princeton’s PGY-1 residency program. Maxson is currently the assistant director for Advancing Kidney Health through Optimal Medication Management, an organization that engages pharmacists and key stakeholders to develop partnerships for optimal medication management in persons with kidney disease to improve health outcomes and reduce health care costs. Within HCOP’s PRC, Dr. Maxson teaches in the areas of kidney disease and pain management.
Practice Site
Dr. Maxson currently practices pharmacy at the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) clinic which is located inside UAB’s Kirklin Clinic. This clinic is a nurse-practitioner led clinic where we see patients with all levels of CKD and patients who developed acute kidney injury (AKI) while hospitalized at UAB. Dr. Maxson cares for patients with the nurse practitioners and works closely with the clinic director on protocols and research projects for the clinic.
