Consultant Pharmacist 10 hr Certification: Medication Management for the Older Adult -Live Webinar

This program will provide 10 hours of CE credit. The Friday portion of the program will be directed to those wanting to receive Consultant Certification from the Alabama Board of Pharmacy. Saturday’s programming will focus on disease states and medications that impact the older adult. Participants will have the option of registering for both Friday and Saturday programming for a total of 10 hours of CE credit. All 10 hours of programming are approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy for consultant credit hours as well as ACPE credit hours.
Activity Completion Requirements:
To obtain credit for "Medication Management for Older Adults" each participant will need to attend the live seminar and complete the online program evaluation in the week following the seminar. Credit will be uploaded to the ACPE CPE Monitor within 5 business days of completion. Once credit is awarded, transcripts will be available online within 24 hours on the Learner’s CPE Monitor profile at www.nabp.net (http://www.nabp.net/). The Office of Post Graduate Education strongly encourages each participant to check their profile online within 60 days of attendance to ensure credit has been awarded properly. ACPE will not accept CE submissions after 60 days from the live seminar date.
This knowledge-based program is intended for pharmacists and will provide 10 hours of continuing education over two days. This program has been approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy as a prerequisite course to apply for consultant pharmacist certification with the AlBOP.
After completion of this CE program, participants should be able to:
• Recognize common age related changes affecting medication management in older adults.
• Outline the changes in the 2019 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria update.
• Define deprescribing and describe tools used for deprescribing medications in older adults.
• Apply principles of age related changes and deprescribing fundamentals to a patient case.
• Summarize the requirements for consultant licensure for the Alabama Board of Pharmacy.
• Identify pharmacy related regulations in CMS Appendix PP - Guidance to Surveyors for Long Term Care Facilities
• Describe the role and responsibilities of the pharmacist in the many components of medication provision, management, security and assessment in Long Term Care facilities
• Define medication errors in a long term care setting
• Given an example, classify the level of medication error in a long term care setting
• Utilizing knowledge of age related changes in older adults and CMS requirements of pharmacists, appropriately make recommendations for medication management when given a patient case
DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVE LEARNING COMPONENTS.
Throughout the program, participants will be able to answer case-based questions and regulation application questions through PollEverywhere. Additionally, at the end of the CE, participants must take a test in order to obtain their consultant license.
Participants will spend approximately 1.5 hours on practice considerations for older adults, 2 hours on rules and regulations pertaining to consultants, and 0.5 hours for the licensure exam.

Dr. Haley M. Phillippe, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCGP, FASCP is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice with Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy (HSOP), and Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine with the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Huntsville Campus. Her practice site is a large family medicine center, where she provides disease state management and pharmacotherapy services to patients, and actively educates medical residents, medical students, pharmacy residents, and pharmacy students.
Dr. Phillippe also has more than 10 years of practice experience in skilled nursing facilities. Her professional interests include geriatrics, anticoagulation, diabetes, transitions of care, and drugs of abuse.
Amber M. Hutchison, Pharm.D., BCPS is an Associate Clinical Professor at Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy on the Auburn campus. Dr. Hutchison received her Pharm.D. from Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2007. In 2008, she completed her PGY-1 residency at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Florida, and continued to practice at IRMC as a clinical pharmacist until she joined the faculty at Auburn in 2011.
Dr. Hutchison is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and is a Board Certified Geriatric Specialist. She is the consultant pharmacist for the Skilled Nursing Facility at East Alabama Medical Center. She provides medication regimen reviews and participates in a multi-disciplinary team to provide care to patients admitted for rehabilitation services. This service is also an internal medicine learning site for introductory pharmacy practice experiences, advanced pharmacy practice experiences, and PGY-1 residents.
Within the School, Dr. Hutchison teaches in Integrated Learning Experiences in the first, second, and third professional year. Additionally, she coordinates the skills laboratory experiences for the third professional year. She is also a part of the team integrating sterile compounding education throughout the curriculum.
