COVID-19: Best Practices for Vaccines

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on the healthcare system.  The advent of the COVID-19 vaccines have significantly helped reduce the burden of the pandemic, but they have been met with vaccine hesitancy throughout the United States.  Additionally, incorporating the distribution and administration of vaccines to the workflow of community pharmacy and other healthcare settings has been challenging.  This program will address the current recommendations regarding COVID-19 vaccines and address how to combat the misinformation around them, and also address practical considerations for vaccine administration.

Target Audience

This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists, Nurses, and Social Workers.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the current recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines in the United States
  • Identify reasons for vaccine hesitancy as it relates to the COVID-19 vaccines
  • Discuss practical ways to combat vaccine hesitancy and to incorporate these vaccines into the workflow of a community pharmacy setting

Dr. Spencer H. Durham, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCIDP is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and also serves as the Director of Alumni & Professional Affairs with the Harrison School of Pharmacy. He completed his pre-pharmacy coursework at Auburn University and graduated with his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2007. He went on to complete an ASHP-accredited post-graduate residency at Children's Health System in Birmingham, Alabama in 2008. After completion of his residency, he joined the staff at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida as a clinical pharmacist specialist. In 2013, Dr. Durham joined the faculty of the Harrison School of Pharmacy, where he teaches in various courses throughout the curriculum. As Director of Alumni and Professional Affairs, he works proactively with HSOP alumni and other health care professionals from throughout the state and region to foster the development of innovative practice models and to expand and enhance opportunities for continuous professional development. Dr. Durham also oversees the Office of Post Graduate Education (OPGE), which is responsible for the many continuing education programs offered each year by HSOP. Dr. Durham has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles in respected journals and several book chapters.

Mrs. Teri Anders, RPh, graduated from Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy in 1995.  She had a number of years of experience in the community pharmacy setting prior to opening Rock Creek Pharmacy in Hueytown, AL in October of 2005.  She has also been a state leader in the provision of the COVID-19 vaccine.  Community is very important to her and she tries to give back to her community with volunteering and supporting organizations locally.  Additionally, Mrs. Anders is a preceptor for both HCOP and MSOP, and notes that pharmacy students have been a critical help in getting vaccines administered.  And finally, she has two daughters who currently attend pharmacy school, Haley, who is a P3 at HCOP, and Samantha, who is a P2 at MSOP.

Dr. Stephen Sodeke, PhD, is Resident Bioethicist at the Center for Biomedical Research and Professor of Allied Health Sciences and Bioethics at the College of Arts and Sciences, Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, AL.  Dr. Sodeke’s research interests include research ethics, population ethics, neuroethics, cross-cultural bioethics; community bioethics and issues related to community-based participatory research approach, health and human rights; ethical issues in health and health outcomes disparities, and in research with vulnerable populations in the United States and the developing world.

Mrs. Rebecca J. Sorrell, RPh, is a graduate of the Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy and is a co-owner of Ritch’s Pharmacy in Mountain Brook, Alabama.  She has extensive experience with immunizations and has been a state leader in the provision of the COVID-19 vaccine.  In 2021, she was honored with the prestigious Bowl of Hygiea award from the Alabama Pharmacy Association
