Health and Wellness IPPE Essentials: A Toolkit to Promote Preceptor Success
This presentation consists of three modules providing information regarding the Health and Wellness Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) at the Harrison College of Pharmacy, Auburn University. Pharmacist preceptors will be oriented to their responsibilities and student learning objectives applicable to before, during, and after their experiential rotation. The module emphasizes the rotation's three core areas: immunizations, health screenings, and patient counseling.
This project is supported by Auburn University through a grant from the Daniel F. Breeden Endowed Grant Program. The Daniel F. Breeden Endowed Grant Program supports teaching and learning projects that directly benefit the instructor, students, and Auburn University’s overall teaching program.
Target Audience
This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), specifically HCOP preceptors who are serving as preceptors for the Health and Wellness Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience rotation.
Learning Objectives
1) Describe the who, what, how, when, where, and why for the Health and Wellness IPPE course.
2) Review student pharmacist learning expectations during the Health and Wellness Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) rotation.
3) Review student assignments and expectations during the Health and Wellness IPPE rotation.
4) Describe how to utilize the evaluation tool rubric to assess student performance for the Health and Wellness IPPE.

Robert “Bobby” Helmer, PharmD is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy. Dr. Helmer joined the Mobile campus faculty in August 2012 and currently practices with the Internal Medicine services at the University of South Alabama Medical Center. His professional interests include respiratory disorders, neurological disorders, patient education, and health literacy. Additionally, he serves as the Assistant Director of Experiential Programs for the Mobile Campus. In this role, he is a strategic member of HSOP’s experiential programs team and contributes to the development, implementation, and continuous quality improvement of HSOP’s experiential programs. He provides administrative oversight of IPPE, APPE, IPE, and co-curricular activities that are provided for students on the Mobile Campus and within the Mobile region. Dr. Helmer also works to identify, develop, and foster relationships with stakeholders and partners within the Mobile region. Dr. Helmer graduated with his Doctor of Pharmacy degree (first-honor graduate) from the South Carolina College of Pharmacy in Charleston, SC in 2010. Following graduation, he completed a 24-month (PGY1/PGY2) residency in Pharmacotherapy at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was also the chief pharmacy resident. Dr. Helmer is a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP).
Lena McDowell is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Originally from Snowdoun, Alabama, she received a bachelor of science degree in biomedical sciences from Auburn University and completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the Harrison College of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, she completed an ASHP-accredited community pharmacy post-graduate year 1 (PGY-1) residency at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Oxford, Mississippi. Dr. McDowell serves as HCOP’s Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) Coordinator and oversees the college’s five IPPEs: community, health and wellness, health-system, clinical, and population health. In her position, she teaches within the Practice Ready Curriculum in both the didactic and experiential settings. She serves as a preceptor for PGY-1 residents for a longitudinal experiential education rotation. Her primary areas of research and scholarship are focused on experiential education and community pharmacy practice transformation. Dr. McDowell is actively involved in several state, regional, and national pharmacy organizations, including the Alabama Pharmacy Association, Southeastern Pharmacy Experiential Education Consortium, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
Dr. Lynn Stevenson is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Executive Director of Experiential Programs within Clinical Affairs and Outreach. She grew up in southern middle Tennessee and received a full scholarship to play basketball at Auburn University (1986-91). A four-year letter winner with the Auburn women's basketball team, she helped the Tigers to three-straight NCAA Final Fours from 1988-90. Stevenson completed a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1992 and Doctor of Pharmacy in 1994 from Auburn University. Following graduation, she completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at The Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. She has practiced as a clinical pharmacy specialist for Huntsville Hospital System in Huntsville, Alabama and as a Clinical Pharmacist for Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Columbus, Georgia. Prior to joining the faculty of HSOP in January 2007, she served the previous four years as Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator for Columbus Regional Healthcare System. As Executive Director of Experiential Programs for HSOP, Stevenson is responsible for direction of the Office of Experiential Programs Office (EPO) which includes the experiential curriculum, interprofessional education and the co-curriculum. The EPO team is responsible for coordinating student pharmacist training in various practice settings in the P1-P4 years. Lynn works closely with the EPO team, HSOP faculty and affiliate faculty to provide student pharmacists with the best possible training experiences. Stevenson was the recipient of the inaugural HSOP Pinnacle Award in 2019. The Pinnacle Award is given to a HSOP Faculty or Staff member who exemplifies the School’s core values of “Inspiration, Innovation, and Transformation.” Before becoming a faculty member with HSOP in 2007, she was honored by the school as Preceptor of the Year in 2001. She also received the 2006 Community Service Award from the Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
