Navigating the Never-Ending Updates in the Treatment of Resistant Gram-Negative Organisms

This presentation will review the recent updates in the Clinical and Laboratory Science Institute (CLSI) breakpoints for aminoglycosides and how it changes recommended treatment recommendations from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

This program was prepared for the Bay Area Health-System Pharmacy Society and an access code will be required. 

Target Audience

This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE) and Pharmacy Technicians (ACPE). 

Learning Objectives

Pharmacists:

1. Review updated CLSI breakpoints and IDSA treatment guidelines for resistant gram-negative organisms.

2. Evaluate the literature supporting the updated guidelines.

3. Develop strategies for implementation of the updated guidelines into clinical practice.

Pharmacy Technicians:

1. Review new antimicrobial agents used in the treatment of resistant gram-negative infections.

2. Discuss differences in preparation of newer antimicrobial agents.

3. Summarize the consequences of antimicrobial resistance.

Ashley Hawthorne, PharmD, BCCCP is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Harrison College of Pharmacy’s Mobile Campus. Dr. Hawthorne joined the HCOP faculty in January 2023 and currently practices with the Surgical-Trauma ICU team with USA Health, providing clinical pharmacy services. She is board certified in Critical Care Pharmacotherapy, and her areas of interest include infectious diseases, ICU delirium and anticoagulation.
