No Gout About It: A guide for the treatment approach of gout

This presentation will focus on the current gout guideline recommendations from the 2020 ACR Gout Guidelines. In addition, this presentation will focus on uses of second line therapy and introduce ongoing investigational medications that show promise for the future treatment of gout due to the limited number of medications for the treatment of gout.

Target Audience

This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists within the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System. An access code is required to enroll in this program. 

Learning Objectives

1. Describe pathological pathways that contribute to gout
2. List risk factors and aggravators associated with gout
3. Formulate an appropriate non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment plan for acute and chronic gout
4. Evaluate primary literature for ongoing clinical trials for potential medications for gout therapy

Dr. Switzer is originally from Marshall, IL and graduated from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville in May 2022. Her current career interests include ambulatory care, academia, anticoagulation, and infectious disease. After completing her PGY-1 residency, she hopes to pursue a PACT Pharmacist job back in the Midwest with the Departments of Veterans Affairs. During her spare time, Dr. Switzer enjoys being active, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends.
