Opioids and Naloxone: Overdose Recognition, Response, and Prevention

The opioid crisis continues to impact individuals, families, and communities. Timely naloxone administration has proven to be one of the most effective tools in preventing fatal opioid overdoses, yet barriers to access, education, and stigma persist. This webinar will provide an overview of the current opioid landscape, including overdose trends and risk factors. Participants will learn how to recognize an opioid overdose and understand how naloxone works.

Target Audience

This application-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), Physician Assistants (ACCME), Nurse Practitioners (ABN), Nurses (ABN), and Social Workers (ABSWE).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe current trends in opioid misuse and overdose.
  • Identify signs and symptoms of opioid overdose.
  • Explain the mechanism of action, indications, and administration routes for naloxone.
  • Apply evidence-based protocols for overdose response, including safe naloxone administration and post-reversal considerations.

Anne Taylor, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist and science educator with over eight years of research experience in addiction biology and neural circuitry. She earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University, where her work focused on insula–BNST circuit adaptations following alcohol withdrawal and stress. Currently, she is the COACH Postdoctoral Fellow at Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy, contributing to statewide research and educational initiatives aimed at reducing substance misuse in Alabama. Her work spans health outcomes research, continuing education for healthcare professionals, and K–12 substance use education.

Auburn University is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education; credits are recognized nationwide.
