Prescription Weight Loss Pharmacotherapy - Kristi Kelley

August 29, 2022

In internal medicine resident clinics, there are a high percentage of patients who would be classified as obese. The clinic staff, consisting of nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and physicians, work collaboratively to determine the best course of treatment to manage patients with obesity. A body mass index of 30.0 kg/m2 or greater is considered obese.
The pharmacy and nursing staff, along with the social worker, frequently educate patients regarding their pharmacotherapy. The focus of this presentation will be to compare and contrast commonly prescribed weight loss therapies along with non-pharmacologic therapy. The following will be discussed among FDA-approved weight loss therapy: name of the medication, prescribing restrictions, adverse effects, cost, and patient consultation.

John Shannon and Lori Cheng, 4th-year pharmacy students at Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy, will be assisting with the development and delivery of this presentation.
