With market trends of dietary supplements increasing exponentially in the last few years, the discussion of what should pharmacists know or be aware of is very pertinent. For example, from 2019 to 2020 the market cap increased by 17.3% to over 11 billion in annual sales. Supplements like elderberry has doubled sales every year and is now the most profitable supplement of 2020 at over 250 million in annual sales. As popularity of these supplements change, so does the evidence showing their benefits and risks. Pharmacists need to be aware of these benefits and risks and we will discuss that in the presentation.

Sean Smithgall, Pharm.D., joined the Harrison School of Pharmacy in August, 2016 as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice on the school’s Mobile campus. Dr. Smithgall earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from East Tennessee State University College of Pharmacy in 2014. He went on to complete a PGY-1 residency in pharmacotherapy at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He followed that up with a PGY-2 residency in ambulatory care at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University.
Dr. Smithgall is an active member in the Alabama Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ALSHP), the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Dr. Smithgall’s research interest include transitions of care, interprofessional education, and implementation of shared-decision-making models in primary care practice.
PRACTICE SITE
As a clinical faculty member, Dr. Smithgall maintains a practice site in ambulatory care at the University of South Alabama Family Medicine Clinic in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Smithgall has been a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist since 2017. He focuses in chronic disease state management, population health, and transitions of care. He cares for mainly indigent patients along the Gulf Coast.
