Learning Objectives
Describe the different forms of ECMO and indications for each
Describe typical anticoagulation monitoring in patients on ECMO
Recognize common alterations in pharmacokinetics due to ECMO
Formulate appropriate dosage adjustments or monitoring parameters for medications affected by ECMO
This presentation will review extracorporeal life support with focus on institution implementation and pharmacokinetic profiles of commonly used medications in ECLS patients. Baptist Medical Center South will be implementing ECMO, so review on ECMO principles and drug utilization is necessary. There is little guidance on dose adjustments with ECMO but there is data that describes the effect of ECMO on certain therapies.
