COACH Annual Conference: Disparities in Opioid Harm Reduction in Older Adults - IN-PERSON - Auburn

This conference aims to improve healthcare professional knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers regarding opioid harm reduction strategies amongst vulnerable populations and expand the capacity for harm reduction efforts in underserved communities in the Deep South and nationally.

Target Audience

This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), Physician Assistants (ACCME), Nurse Practitioners (ABN), Nurses (ABN), and Social Workers (ABSWE).

1) Describe current guidelines for safe opioid prescribing and harm reduction strategies in older adults

2) Explore patient cases to illustrate real-world applications for healthcare providers treating the older adult population

3) Establish a network of interdisciplinary professionals to bring awareness to resources available for the safe use of opioids in the older adult population

Garrett Aikens, PharmD, BCACP is the Associate Chief of Pharmacy, Clinical Services at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center. Dr. Aikens graduated from Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy in 2011 and completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Montana and Community Medical Center in Missoula, Montana. After completing his residency, Dr. Aikens joined the Central Alabama VA Health System as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Primary Care from 2012-2016. In 2016 and 2017, Dr. Aikens helped create the VA Southeast Network's Academic Detailing Program providing services to multiple facilities throughout Alabama and Georgia. In addition to his clinical practice within the VA, Dr. Aikens practiced part time in community pharmacy at the Fairfax Drug Company in Valley, AL. In 2017, Dr. Aikens transitioned to his current position as the Associate Chief of Pharmacy, Clinical Services at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center where he serves on the P&T Committee and the VA Southeast Network Clinical Pharmacy Practice Council. Throughout his time within the Veterans Health Administration, Dr. Aikens has been directly involved in implementing and monitoring elements of the VHA Opioid Safety Initiative including utilizing the PDMP to improve patient safety.

 

Dr. J. Luke Engeriser attended medical school at Northwestern University and completed psychiatry residency training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. Dr. Engeriser served an additional three years in the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he held the position of Chief, Department of Behavioral Health. After separating from the Army, Dr. Engeriser was Medical Director of Mid-Coast Mental Health Center/PenBay Psychiatry in Rockland, Maine. Prior to attending medical school, he completed a Master of Arts in Divinity at the University of Chicago and worked as a teacher of English at the Teacher Training College in Torun, Poland. Dr. Engeriser is a Past President of the Alabama Psychiatric Physicians Association, and he is currently President of the Alabama Society of Addiction Medicine. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and American Society of Addiction Medicine. He is currently the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for AltaPointe Health and is the Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency and Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of South Alabama.

 

Lindsey Hohmann, Pharm.D., Ph.D., joined the Harrison School of Pharmacy as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice on October 1, 2019. In her role, she will promote clinical and translational science research within the school. Dr. Hohmann’s research interests include implementation science and mixed methods, substance misuse prevention, and implementation of innovations in community-based healthcare organizations. After earning a bachelor’s degree in cell and developmental biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2008, Dr. Hohmann went on to complete her Pharm.D. at the University of California San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2012. After spending several years in practice, Dr. Hohmann came to Auburn, completing her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2019. While at HSOP, she studied in the Health Outcomes Research and Policy option. Her doctoral dissertation, “Empowering community pharmacists to prevent opioid overdose deaths: development and implementation of a targeted naloxone training program,” focused on enhancing naloxone services implementation in community pharmacies in Alabama. The study was funded by Auburn University departmental support and grant number R36HS026669 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Dr. Hohmann is a Medication Therapy Management (MTM) certified pharmacist. She is also active within the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR).

 

Cherry Jackson, Pharm.D., BCPP, FASHP, FCCP received a B.S. degree in biology from Winthrop University. At the Medical University of South Carolina, she completed a B.S. degree in Pharmacy, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice. She currently serves as Professor in the Harrison College of Pharmacy and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology and Clinical Specialist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She served as Professor and Assistant Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs at South University School of Pharmacy in Savannah, Georgia, after a 12-year career at the Medical University of South Carolina. At the Medical University of South Carolina, she served as Director of Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice Residencies, Clinical Coordinator and Director of Pharmacy, as well as holding academic appointments in both the Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine. Board certified in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice, her primary area of interest and research is in schizophrenia, mood disorders, and adverse effects of psychotropics. She lectures and publishes extensively in psychiatry, and is a member of several editorial boards. She is also a member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, where she served on the Council of Deans, and completed a Academic Research Program Fellowship. She was a Founder of the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists, formerly known as the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacy, where she served many roles and currently holds the office of Past President. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

 

Karen F. Marlowe is the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Davis Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice for the Harrison College of Pharmacy. After serving as the Assistant Dean for the Mobile Campus since its inception in 2007, she was selected for the Associate Dean for Academic Programs role beginning July 1, 2022. Marlowe joined the Harrison College of Pharmacy faculty in the Department of Pharmacy Practice in 2000. Since 2007, she has served as associate department head and assistant dean of the Mobile Campus. Marlowe is a 1993 graduate of Auburn, earning a bachelor of science in pharmacy. She remained at the Harrison College of Pharmacy and completed her doctor of pharmacy in 1995. She completed her pharmacy practice residency at Egleston Children's Hospital, now Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. After completing her residency Marlowe initiated a practice in the cardiac intensive care and cardiopulmonary transplant units at Egleston, serving as a pharmacotherapy specialist in pediatric, neonatal, and cardiac intensive care until 2000. Initially coming to HCOP as an assistant professor, she was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2006 and was named Davis Professor in 2015. Since 2019, Marlowe has also served as the founding director of the Auburn University Center for Opioid Research, Education and Outreach. As a practitioner, she has served as an adjunct faculty member in the University of South Alabama College of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine since 2000. She is board certified in pharmacotherapy by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties and is credentialed in pain management by the American Academy of Pain Management. She is a certified pain educator and provides care for inpatient internal medicine patients, and maintains a consult service and patient advocacy program for patients with chronic pain or terminal illness. 

 

Shanna McIntosh is the VitAL Director in the School of Social Work at the University of Alabama. She earned a master’s degree in Counseling and Psychology. Shanna has more than ten years of experience as a Substance Use Treatment Director, Substance Use counselor, Mental Health therapist and a certified case manager. In her current role as the VitAL Director, she oversees the administration and implementation of three federally funded grants and one state funded grant. She serves as an advisor to the board for the Parent Resource Institute of Drug Education of Tuscaloosa, as well as the Tuscaloosa Mental Health Alliance, and is a co-founder of the West Alabama Recovery Coalition.

 

Haley M. Phillippe, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCGP, FASCP is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice with Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy (HSOP), and Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine with the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Huntsville Campus. Her practice site is a large family medicine center, where she provides disease state management and pharmacotherapy services to patients, and actively educates medical residents, medical students, pharmacy residents, and pharmacy students. Dr. Phillippe also has more than 10 years of practice experience in skilled nursing facilities. Her professional interests include geriatrics, anticoagulation, diabetes, transitions of care, and drugs of abuse. A native of Scottsboro, Alabama, Dr. Phillippe earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from HSOP in 2006. Following graduation, she completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice residency with emphasis in ambulatory care at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Phillippe joined the HSOP faculty in 2007. She became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 2007 and a Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist in 2017. Dr. Phillippe has been active in national pharmacy organizations including American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). She has served on and chaired numerous committees within these organizations. In 2018, she received the distinction of Fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. Dr. Phillippe received the HSOP Excellence in Outreach Award in 2018, the HSOP Faculty Research Excellence Award in 2018 and 2019, and the HSOP Preceptor of Excellence Award in 2013-14. She received the ACCP Member Volunteer Recognition Award in 2011, 2013, and 2014. 

 

Sean Smithgall, Pharm.D., joined the Harrison College of Pharmacy in August, 2016 and is currently an associate clinical professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice on the college’s Mobile campus. Dr. Smithgall earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from East Tennessee State University College of Pharmacy in 2014. He went on to complete a PGY-1 residency in pharmacotherapy at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He followed that up with a PGY-2 residency in ambulatory care at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University. As a clinical faculty member, Dr. Smithgall maintains a practice site in ambulatory care at the University of South Alabama Family Medicine Clinic in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Smithgall has been a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist since 2017. He focuses in chronic disease state management, population health, and transitions of care. He cares for mainly indigent patients along the Gulf Coast. Dr. Smithgall is an active member in the Alabama Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ALSHP), the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Dr. Smithgall’s research interest include transitions of care, interprofessional education, and implementation of shared-decision-making models in primary care practice.

 

Anne Taylor is a neuroscientist and educator with over eight years of experience in biomedical research. Her work spans academia, public health initiatives, and education, with a strong focus on substance use disorders and opioid education. Currently, she serves as the COACH Fellow at Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy, where she participates in research and outreach efforts to address Alabama’s opioid crisis.
