Clinical reasoning in pharmacy practice is a commonly used and vitally important skill. Although we expect these skills to develop and strengthen particularly in the experiential education setting, they are often difficult to objectively define, teach, and evaluate among pharmacy learners. It has been described by preceptors as a skill that: “We know it when we see it, we believe that we use it, but we struggle to teach it.” This presentation will provide an overview of the skills and characteristics that play into effective clinical reasoning and discuss practical strategies for preceptors to utilize to help guide, strengthen, and evaluate clinical reasoning skills within their learners.
While student resilience and well-being is a hot topic in the pharmacy education world, pharmacy preceptors are also at a high risk of experiencing burnout. Preceptors at risk for burnout experience less job satisfaction and can develop disinterest in their patient care and precepting responsibilities, which can lead to patient safety issues and diminished learning environments for students. This portion of the presentation will review data highlighting the risks of preceptor burnout, risk factors and assessment tools to identify those at risk for burnout, and describing strategies for managing/preventing preceptor burnout including practical resources.
