The Silver Lining: Navigating Diabetes in Older Adults

Approximately 11% of adults in the United States have diabetes and ~29% of adults that are greater than or equal to 65 years of age have diabetes. Annually the American Diabetes Association
updates their Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, including specific recommendations for older adults, while other endocrine organizations periodically update their treatment algorithms. Most
recently, the International Geriatric Diabetes Society published recommendations. These evidence-based clinical practice recommendations are commonly utilized to provide comprehensive
management for persons with diabetes. Key updates to management of type 2 diabetes for these clinical practice recommendations, including special considerations for management in older adults,
will be highlighted in this presentation. The key characteristics and roles of newer agents in the management of type 2 diabetes will be emphasized. Prevention of hypoglycemia and limiting
hyperglycemia continue to be goals of therapy regardless of the healthcare setting where patients are. Pharmacists are faced with trying to keep up with the new clinical practice guidelines, data, and
new medications and being ready to apply it to patient cases. A variety of cases will be presented and questions regarding goals, management of and monitoring for hyperglycemia and
hypoglycemia, and unique characteristics of newer agents used to manage diabetes will be posed to the attendees. This presentation will discuss evidence-based options for the management of type
2 diabetes in the patient cases incorporated.
