The cornerstone of antimicrobial stewardship is the correct use of antimicrobial agents. In order to use antimicrobial agents correctly, clinicians must be familiar with the drugs themselves, including their spectrum activity, mechanisms of action, adverse effect profile, and major drug interactions. Additionally, multiple new agents have been brought to the market in recent years, and clinicians must be aware of where these new agents fit into clinical practice.

Social determinants of health (SDoH) are nonmedical factors that significantly influence health outcomes. Studies highlight the need and opportunity for healthcare providers to screen for negative SDoH and connect individuals with resources to address these risks. This presentation will review SDoH, their prevalence in Alabama, and their impact on people with diabetes. It will also cover the current status of screening and referral practices, as well as considerations for incorporating SDoH-related services into practice.

Research has shown that practitioners trained in Motivational Interviewing (MI) have greater confidence in talking with individuals about new topics and greater satisfaction with worklife due to increased success in helping facilitate an individual's decision-making for behavior change. This presentation will provide a brief summary of key MI skills and approach, along with example dialogs to illustrate MI-consistent and MI-inconsistent applications in the SDOH screening and referral contexts.

Social determinants of health (SDoH) are linked to diabetes and prediabetes prevalence, poorly controlled diabetes, and cardiometabolic disease disparities leading to national calls to address upstream SDoH to improve health equity. In order to act upon SDoH – either through tailored care delivery or social referral outside of the health system – clinicians must first be able to screen for adverse SDoH, or social risks.
